Overview

The Baltic Sea Region study sub-programme offers in-depth knowledge of the most important cultural and social phenomena of the Baltic Sea Region and their digital resources, it forms a comprehensive understanding of cultural, environmental and social processes, their universal and local manifestations, looking at their development in the context of sustainability. Students of the programme acquire current research methods in the humanities and social sciences (literary sciences, art sciences, cultural history, cultural theory, sociolinguistics, demography, etc.), as well as basic principles of planning and implementation of sustainable initiatives in the humanitarian and social fields (for example, in the course “Sustainable cultural environment of education”), and can apply them in their professional activities.

Within the programme, students will study common study courses and specialization courses of the chosen sub-programme. Most of the courses are focused on the multifaceted study and research of the Baltic Sea region, focusing more on the eastern part – the Baltics and Finland, as well as not avoiding to look at localities less present in public discourse (for example, divided East Prussia). Thematically, the sub-programme focuses on literature, music, audiovisual arts, cultural history, language situation, as well as aspects related to population, environment and tourism (“Sustainable tourism development and product management”). In addition to cross-regional themes, a special attention in the linguistic module is paid to the problems of the Baltic Finns (Estonians, Finns, Livs, etc.). The interdisciplinarity of the sub-programme is ensured not only by the inclusion of different disciplines, but also by cross-cutting themes (e.g. “consequences of totalitarianism and their overcoming”, “island world”, etc.) both within one thematic module and between different modules.

Career opportunities

The academic education offered by the programme provides an opportunity to focus professionally on the cultural and social field of the Baltic Sea Region countries, based on the principles of sustainability such as inclusion of diversity, civic responsibility and participation, social and environmental justice. Graduates are motivated to work in state, non-governmental and private institutions, diplomatic structures – embassies, cultural, business and other representations in Latvia and abroad, international organizations, etc., business enterprises operating in the Baltic Sea region, higher education institutions and research institutes. Upon successful completion of the programme, one can study for a doctorate.

UL full-time students, regardless of their citizenship, have the opportunity to apply for the ERASMUS + exchange program for studies or/and traineeship.
